Offshore Wind

The key to a sustainable energy mix

For decades, Rogaland has successfully pioneered offshore solutions in some of the most demanding conditions in the world. In the transition to renewables, Norway is playing a leading role in the burgeoning offshore wind industry.

Demand for clean energy is soaring as the electrification of society accelerates. Offshore wind will play a key role in the sustainable energy mix of the future.

Norway has it all when it comes to offshore wind: decades of offshore sector experience, a complete supply chain, a world-class technology and digital solutions. Norwegian innovations across the board prioritise sustainability - from green port infrastructure to hydrogen-powered service vessels and subsea inspection robots.

Floating offshore wind began in Rogaland

The world's first floating offshore wind turbine, Zefyros, has been operational at the Marine Energy Test Centre in Rogaland since 2009. In the following years, multiple concepts have been demonstrated at this world leading North Sea centre for offshore wind, with more to come.

The first floating offshore wind area to be tendered in Norway is the 1500 MW capacity Utsira Nord off the coast of Rogaland.

The Norwegian government has an ambition of awarding 30 GW to offshore wind by 2040, almost doubling the capacity of the current power production. 75% of the areas identified for offshore wind by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate are floating, and Rogaland is positioning itself as a world-leading offshore wind hub
